LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Dear Catapult Community, Summer is finally here! Hope you are all enjoying the sunshine. I wanted to share with you just a few things that I think you will want to add to your agendas. This summer we are kicking off our 2011 Business Speaker Series (BSS) in a new way. We have switched up our programming to allow you a glimpse into the workspace of the speaker. I hope you will join us on Wednesday, June 29th, when we visit PixelMEDIA's Co-Founder, Tom Obrey at Pixel's new location on Pease. Many of you may already be familiar with Pixel and/or Tom. PixelMEDIA is a digital marketing studio that provides web design, hosting, search marketing, brand identity and strategic planning services – just to name just a few areas of their expertise. Some of Pixel's clients are Sam Adams, Ecco Shoes, Harvard University and Segway. Eric Dodier and Tom Obrey have grown the company quite a bit since they founded the firm together in 1994, and are both quite accomplished in their own right. I am looking forward to hearing Tom share their success story with us, while tracing his own career path to date. Tom was the keynote speaker at last year's TechWorld and will likely provide another spirited talk to kick off our 2011 BSS. Another item I wanted to bring to your attention is Stay Work Play and Business New Hampshire Magazine's Rising Star Awards. Nominations are now being accepted for Coolest Company, Young Professional of the Year, Young Professional Network Program of the Year and the Stay Work Play Leadership Award. An event highlighting the winners will take place this fall. I think it would be really great to highlight the Seacoast's rising stars as there is no shortage of them! Please make an effort to submit your nominations and help put your peers on the map! I already have a few submissions in mind... Hope you all have a fantastic summer! They always seem to fly by so quickly. I know your weekends will be full, but be sure to take some time during the week to connect with us. Our events team is focused on providing fun business after hour events that provide a forum for learning and facilitating relationships, which often result in job opportunities. Don't miss out. See you at Pixel! Helen Donington Chair & Co-Founder, Catapult Seacoast Join our new fan page! UPCOMING CATAPULT EVENTS Business Speaker Series Date: Wednesday, June 29th Time: 6-8pm Location: PixelMEDIA, 75 New Hampshire Ave. Suite 100, Portsmouth, NH 03801
The first Business Speaker Series (BSS) event of 2011 will be held from 6-8pm on June 29th at PixelMEDIA. The first speaker host will be Thomas Obrey who cofounded PixelMEDIA with his business partner Erik Dodier in 1994. Since then, Obrey has been instrumental in growing PixelMEDIA from a two-person company to the successful full-service digital marketing agency it is today. The BSS is an event series designed to stretch beyond networking in order to provide members with a unique opportunity to meet dynamic, successful, Seacoast business people in an intimate setting and open forum. Each event is limited in attendance in order to provide an intimate environment promoting personalized conversations and interaction between the speaker, moderator and audience. Join us on June 29th to see how Obrey will answer Catapult's signature question: "What can someone working for you do to catapult themselves to the next level?"Catapult Connects Date: Wednesday, July 13th Time: 5-7pm Location: The Sheraton Harborside Hotel, 250 Market St, Portsmouth, NH New this year, Catapult Seacoast will have an after business hours networking event the second Wednesday of each month. July's event will be held at The Sheraton Harborside Hotel outside on the patio if weather permitting from 5-7pm. Catapult Connects is an opportunity for members to network and socialize in a casual setting. This event will continue throughout the summer months with the events being held at various local venues. This is a great opportunity to get out on the town and make some new connections! We hope to see you there! IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Spring Into Action April 28th at the Wentworth By the Sea Catapult Seacoast held their 3rd annual Spring Into Action Philanthropy Event at the Wentworth By the Sea on April 28th. It was a great evening, with 14 local non-profit groups in attendance to showcase their organizations. The evening offers the opportunity for Catapult members to learn about the various non-profit groups so that they may chose to become involved with volunteering and other needs of the organizations. The event was held in the Wentworth's Grand Ballroom with an "expo" type setting. Each non-profit group had five minutes to present information and stories about their organization, and then the attendees visited the booths afterwards to learn how to sign up to volunteer. Catapult Seacoast offers this event to members to build relationships with these important community groups, while boosting both personal and professional growth. Liberty Mutual's Exeter office made the evening possible with their generous sponsorship. Liberty Mutual offers special discounts to Catapult's membership. Members can contact James Saunders at Liberty Mutual in Exeter for more information. The following non-profit organizations were in attendance. Readers can click on the link to the websites to learn more about the organizations: - March of Dimes - United Way - Families First - Foundation for Seacoast Health - Friends Forever - Great Bay Services - Breast Cancer Stories - New Heights Adventure for Teens - Discover Portsmouth - City Year - Community Childcare Center of Portsmouth - Child Advocacy Center of Rockingham - Cocheco Valley Humane Society - Jass Boxing Catapult Seacoast offers their sincere thanks to all of the non-profit groups and members who attended. We look forward to another successful Spring Into Action evening next year! United Way Day of Caring at the Players Ring Theatre Catapult Seacoast sponsored its 5th annual United Way Day of Caring team project at Strawberry Banke's historic Players Ring Theatre on May 11th. The Day of Caring is a community-wide day of hands-on volunteering in which United Way connects volunteers from local businesses and community groups with local non-profit organizations to work on various one-time projects that would not otherwise be completed. The Day of Caring empowers people to work together to address some of the most pressing needs facing our community. Catapult's team worked on insulating the ceilings between floors of the historic theatre building. While this year's team was smaller in size, they were able to complete a majority of the work-in-progress. The Player's Ring Theatre is currently undergoing a major historic restoration project. Catapult's volunteer team included Phil Lewis of Liberty Mutual, Matthew Romano of People's United Bank, and this semester's Catapult UNH intern Kelsey Laubenstein. Thanks to all who made it out to help revitalize one of Portsmouth's historic gems! Catapult Connects Catapult if the Seacoast held its very first Catapult Connects event at the Portsmouth Gas Light Company on May 11th. Catapult Connects is a networking opportunity for members to meet and connect in a casual social setting. The event was a success with about 30 members in attendance and many new faces and good energy in the room. Our second Catapult Connects event was held on June 8th at The Blue Mermaid Island Grille. Catapult Connects will be held on the second Wednesday of each month from 5-7pm at various local venues. Our next Catapult Connects is Wednesday July 13th at The Sheraton Harborside Hotel. We hope to see you there! SEACOAST BUSINESS BRIEFS - Timberland Co. sells for $2.2B - N.H. jobless rate drops again WHAT'S NEW

O'DONNELL Social Networking for Career Success By CAREEREALISM-Approved Expert, Miriam Salpeter ![]() With competition at a feverish pitch, job seekers and business owners need to distinguish themselves from everyone else to get ahead. Statistics show many jobs are filled via networking; successful applicants had an advocate inside the company. Networking well requires two things: 1) making sure as many people as possible know about the candidate and 2) convincing those people the job seeker is the best candidate to get the job done. It's important to establish a community of people willing to facilitate an introduction, set up an informational meeting or hand-deliver a resume to a hiring manager.
